Frequently asked questions

What actually counts as a dental emergency?

Severe toothache, facial swelling, a knocked-out or broken tooth, bleeding that will not stop, or a lost crown or filling that is causing pain. If you are not sure, call anyway. We would far rather tell you it can wait until morning than have you sit through the night wondering.

My tooth just got knocked out — what do I do right now?

Pick it up by the crown, never the root. If it is dirty, rinse it in milk or saline for a second, not under a tap. Put it back in the socket if you can and bite gently on a cloth. If you cannot, keep it in milk, or in your own saliva inside your cheek, and get to us immediately. The first hour is what decides whether the tooth survives.

You’re closed. What do I do until morning?

Message us on WhatsApp anyway so you are first in the book. Meanwhile: ordinary painkillers, cold compress on the outside of the cheek for swelling, and sleep propped up rather than flat, which takes the throbbing down noticeably. If the swelling is spreading towards your eye or throat, or you cannot swallow, treat it as a hospital emergency and go straight to A&E.

My swelling went down. Can I just leave it?

No. Swelling settling means the pressure found somewhere to drain, not that the infection has gone. It comes back, usually worse and at a less convenient moment. Get it looked at while it is calm.

I’m a visitor and I fly out soon. Can you at least stop the pain?

Yes. If there is not time to complete proper treatment before your flight, we can settle the infection and make the tooth safe to travel on, then send you home with the X-rays and notes your own dentist needs to finish it. We will tell you honestly which of the two we are doing.
